youngoutdoorsaction wrench question
What do you guys use between a high polished SS action and the action wrench to grip but not scratch or mark the action?

gunmakerCereal box cut shim with a 24" Crescent wrench. ALWAYS have the breech block installed.
This is for a falling block....
I actually use an 18 inch Crescent wrench with a 3 foot cheater bar on everything; if I am concerned about finish, I use 1/4 inch thick aluminum pieces, covered with duct tape.
On Rem 700s; internal wrench.
I do not even try to remove 1917 Enfield or Howa barrels; I part them off in the lathe and unscrew by hand.

acme threads are a thing -- i posted some pics about 15 years ago of how to do this the "easy" way
I have made aluminum sleeves - two parts - in different diameters to meet any barrel size.
Actually I didn’t make them myself, I drew them and had one of the many excellent workshops here do it.
I use cotton tissue paper - it doesn’t feel like paper, more like fine fluffy cloth, I buy off Amazon, between these and the barrel.
Works great.
And I use a long pipe on the wrench.
Makes opening action that much easier.

Duane Wiebe (CG&R)You're both sorta right. Acme thrads are found on FHZ take down actions. Of course it can be done on small thread large ring 98's

Powdered rosin mixed with denatured alcohol to form a thin slurry. Swab it on, let it flash off and use a sticky note or two between the barrel and bushing. Remove slurry with a patch soaked in alcohol.
For barrels, I use powdered rosin, but he wants to know about receivers.
I do not attempt to torque off Enfields because I don't want to take the risk of cracking; as for Howas, they are standard v threads, but they hire Japanese Sumos with a 6 foot bar with more torque than lug nuts on a Kenworth. I just tell the client; you ain't getting the old barrel back.

Paper or automotive masking tape in between the steel parts. Make sure the wrench fits right and is tight.

youngoutdoorsThanks guys. I used a sheet of notebook paper and had the action wrench tight. I have never used one of the internal wrenches but am thinking about it now. It was a 700 clone. And I agree the Howas are always tight. But they will come off.

gunmakerdon't use internal wrenches on very tight barrels
