My Grandfather recently gave me a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 30.06 which was my great-grandfathers. My Grandfather has a letter from Winchester that says it was made in December of 1941, which would make it 60 this month . There is a light scratch on the stock and some of the blueing has worn off of the floor plate and the end of the barrel, other than that it's in excellent shape. The serial number is in the 37,000s and it has a 24in barrel. It also has the Winchester Proof Steel marking but I don't recall the rest of the markings because I took it hunting and it's still in the truck. I went to the local book store and browsed through some of the firearm price guides but I didnt see 30.06 listed. Could anyone tell me the value of this rifle?

What you have there is a pre-war M70 standard grade rifle. Not sure on the value because of the early serial number but a later model of the same type will typically bring $550-$750 in above average condition.

Matt, go to GunsAmerica and check the listings for sale. There are usually a couple vintage model 70's there The '06 is the probably the most common caliber. You will have to determine if it is one of the factory fancy alternatives which raises the value some. Also, the long actions, .300 and .375 H&H are probably more valuable. My grandfather left me his .300 H&H and the sentimental value far outweighs the intrinsic value. good luck

Your gun should be a pre-war gun, not a pre 64, it should have a clover leaf tang...As described it is worth about $600.00 give or take a fifty dollar bill....depending on condition which is everything in collectable guns. If it is in absolute new, minty condition it would bring $1000 and up.
