My Cousin in Ok. wants to know if he should rechamber a Win. lever 30-30 to this "Super" 30-30.
I've never heard of it.
Is anyone familiar with this one? Is it worth the trouble?
Thanks.

If he means the 30-30 AI, I think the new Hornady ammo makes it a moot point. But it is faster than standard 30-30 ammo by a reasonable margin.

If he means the 307 Winchester, I think it has to have the Big Bore action to take the extra pressure.

If there's a third 30-30 I'd like to hear more about it.

All I know is he says a smith in Okie City wants him to do it. The smith says it will increase the velocity to 100fps slower than a 308.
All he hunts is Okie deer, and Bobcats. I figure I'll tell him to go for it. He's an old sick guy, and if he wants it, what the hell, go for it!
Thanks.

smells like BS to me.....I'd surely want to know a lot more about it.

sam fadala wrote a good book on the m94, from a shooting perspective, not collecting. he devoted a good bit of time to several wildcats that work or can be made to work in that action. one of course was a simple improved chamber but - and i sold the book so am going off memory - there were others based on 30-40 krag cases shortened and blown out and such. results were very successful even within the pressure limits of the rifle. plus, the work ackley did on improved chambers showed considerably reduced bolt thrust for straighter walled cases. within 100fps of 308 - again based on what i remember - would not be SANELY possible but there were significant improvements over the basic 30-30 round. now, the question remains, why'd you want to? if he's serious, i'd recommend getting a copy of that book and reading it first as will be a lot cheaper than the gun work.

Concho, the dies alone will cost more than the rifle but I better back off that 'cause I've done worse.

This is possible with the .307 Win., but could not safely be achieved with a .30/30 case in any rifle! And, as mentioned above, the .307 uses the beefed-up receiver version of the M94......

If its a 30-30 AI its a good cartridge. Ackley writes about 2700 fps with 150 gr bullets out of a Win 94 (something tells me those loads are on the warm side). If its something else I'd be hesitant.

midway has 30-30 ackley improved dies from lee for $25. or rcbs for $125. i'd go w/ lee. they work fine. and headspacing on the rim regular factory ammo could be fired in it. cartridges of the world (only source i have at hand) shows 2600fps w/ a 150 grain bullet and 2300 w/ a 170. depending on exactly what he wanted out of his rifle, it could be worth it. almost tho sounds to me like a gunsmith trying to sell some work.

Why don't you tell him to try some of the new Hornady Leverevolution 30/30n Win ammo that has a pointed bullet you can use in a tubular magazine and a boost in velocity like their Light Mag rounds, That way you don't wind up with a good weapon in a caliber that would be impossible to sell.

If your brother wants a little more vel.out of a 30-30 and not bringing up the pressure o hurt the action, and he reloads tell him to load 130gr FN bullets. Thats what i did for mine and they scoot along fast enought to kill for sure. van
