Hi fellas! I need some big help, I appreciate any,and all replies. Ok hear is my problem. when i chamber a round somtimes the shell seems to jump up ahead of the bolt face, it gets shoved to far into the chamber and when i extract it leaves the bullet in the lands of the chamber, thus pulling out the case without the bullet. Or if it doesn't do that when i lift the bolt to extract, somehow the extracter gets raised up out of the groove in the bolt, and as i pull the bolt back the extracter stayes and does'nt pull the round out, thus jaming the bolt enoughf so i have to take a rubber mallet and with a light tap move the bolt back, pull it out and replace the extracter. I bought the gun new 2 years ago this is the first problems i have had. i have been reloading for 40 some years, and i load for this gun. I shot a standard 270 for 30 some years, and i use a 300WN,340WBY,and have no problems with them. i use rcbs full length dies for all my loading, i set the dies up acording to the info you get with the dies is there somthing i'm missing? is the shoulder not set back enough? i have heard there can be a problem if the shooulder is not right. I am ready to contact winchester on this but if it is somthing else, somthing i can control, somthing i am not doing right, it would be greatly appreciated if sombody would educate me,never to old to learn a new trick. be wating to hear some replies thank you!

It does sound like your col is too long..The bullet shouldnt get stuck in there if it is seated to correct depth..Try a heavy crimp

Thank you so much for the feed back on this. I did take your advise and seated the bullet alittle deeper as you sugested,it worked perfict. itook it out and shot 15 rounds through it without a hitch. When i bought the gun nosler was and as far as i know still is the only one that carries reloading info on the wsm's, any way i havn't been able to find any others in my area. in that text they give you an over all case length period. In my hornady book it gives you length for each different bullet weight, but they don't carry any info on short mags. So i used the nosler info which says 2.860 which was way to long for my chamber i ended up at 2.790 anyway it works so thankyou again.

Maybe the throat is too short, that could be pushed ahead very easily with a separate throater. But check your OAL and see if it is right.

Look at any good reloading manual, or search the web for methods to determine the max seating length for your rifle and bullet combo. If you find you cannot load to the allowable OAL for your caliber, you have a defective rifle and should get it corrected by the manufacturer! 2.86" sounds correct, so assuming you are measuring correctly, there is a problem.

I am certainly no great expert on reloading, although I have been doing it for about 30 years. Anyway, whenever I get a different rifle to reload I don't usually rely on the book for overall length. Rather, I keep a can of machinists dye on hand. I paint the bullets on a few that I deliberately load long and then I run them through the gun and check for marks, and then keep running them in the die until there just barely aren't any marks. That way I have a custom fit to that particular gun.

Same technique might work for you.

one more thing. that extractor shouldn't be doing what its doing. if its a winchester rifle, those extractors are cast instead of spring steel. I had one that had to be replaced twice. Darcy Echols changes out all of his extractors on his winchesters and replaces them with a spring steel extractor. you might want to do the same. Williams makes them. Others may make them as well.
