I am working on a 7mm-08 project (posted in the custom rifles section)Here is a Link and I am looking for a way to Engrave the Caliber and My Name on the barrel. I usually just use stamps. But I would like to make this one a little nicer.

Does anyone have any recommendations of people that could engrave the caliber and my name?

Local trophy shop should be able to do it for you.

I use a Hermes. I can do it with two different fonts, block and scroll.

Some of the local smiths may have the acid etching system. Looks good and is easy if you have one. I just happen to have a buddy that has one.

Call a few jewelers, you'll find one who will do it. I've done several on a pantagraph engraver. A word of warning for someone who has never done this before. Use a tripod to support the end of the barrel not in the vice. The vises on engravers are very small and not designed to hold the weight of a barrel. I had a couple slip out of the vice while engraving and had to refinish them and start over before I started using the tripod for support.

Most of the jewelers will not do this; they have no way of holding a barrel with all of the weight being off center. You would be fortunate to find one who will attempt to do it for you. I had a local guy who would, but it got to be such a PITA running back and forth that I found a used Hermes and now do my own.

Wish I had a Hermes, or even an acid-etching setup.

Masny years ago, I had a Hermes..purchased it for this very reason.

Sold it quickly...But had I know about acid etching then...I might have kept it. The Hermes as is gives but the faintest scratch on steel...great on gold and silver.

The depth obtained with the Hermes alone will not pass muster for serial number ID.

I have a Cropnite machine now and with acid can really put in quite dseep lettering.

The plus side is that you can etch in coats of arms, monograms. even copy pohotos.

However, it does not hold a cancdle wo real hand engraving. If Scrolcutter can shoe horn in such a project...Hedaman

Look for a local trophy shop or jeweler that has a pantograph that has a motor driven spindle with a cutter for engraving. Most are diamond scratch machines, but I have a Gorton that I used to use for lettering layout. It has 20k rpm cutter that can cut lettering very well. An older establishment might still use one of these for special projects...Hell, New Hermes still makes one. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the input.

The only Local Smith that I have near me has a stamp set. All the other “Smiths” are gun shop owners that install scopes and call themselves “Gunsmiths”

I tried the local trophy shops and they did not want to work on a “Firearm”.

I guess I am back to the stamp method.

If you are ever up near Sacramento, I have a New Hermes engraver (motor driven) and an electro etching machine and can engrave anything you'd like.

What fonts do you have available? Do you have any pictures? What would it cost for “7MM-08” on One side and “Hinnrichs” on the other.

We can take this to the PM section if you would prefer.
