In the process of putting together a 404
Jeffrey. Thinking of using a 700 Remington in 375 H & H
to rebarrel. What would be a good contour
For the 404 barrel
Using the same stock Trued action. I know a lot of 404 ‘s people built on here

I use the Oberndorf contour, .650 muzzle. Some like them heavier, some lighter. Those who like recoil, like them lighter.

My 404 has a Walther #1400 "heavy wt. Sporter".
At 24" its .664 at the muzzle. With no scope comes in at 8.5 lbs on a Mod. 70 action. Recoil is not bad at 2280 fps.

If you like the looks of the Mauser sporter barrels. the LW 5310 contour is a slick choice...I think dpcd also offers this in a Douglas band

Might get some argument on a 98 Mauser, but on a Rem 700 in 404 Id just go with a 24 inch Douglas #4 or #5 if you want more weight..My 404s and 416 weigh about 9 lbs or less with scope. 8lbs without.

ON a custom Mauser Id go with an original Mauser turn with island iron sights intregal Lothar Walthar barrel, my favorite barrels.

Also for DG I personally prefer controlled feed rifles, and Mauser actions with a drop box..I like stuff like quarter ribs or full ribbed barrels etc.

A 423-14 CM 6-groove #5 contour Lilja barrel chambered for the 404-375 H&H on a Weatherby Southgate Mauser action is 0.718 @ 24". Scoped rifle weighs 9 lb 6 oz unloaded and no sling.

I built my 404 on a Remington 300 RUM action. Feeds flawlessly but you have to open the bolt head to magnum specs. I opted to just turn .007 off my brass since I will not be going to Africa in the near future.

Barrel is Walther, which was a real pain to obtain but chambered like a knife through butter. 9.5 pounds with a scope and iron sights. 24" barrel, 0.652 at the muzzle.

Couldn't be happier, but at 71, 2025 fps is the max recoil I can stand at the moment.

Feeds upside down, while having sex standing up one one leg, and in the presence of several 22 year old honeys, so there CRM nasties!
