I just got a .308 cal #5 SS Krieger 1~10 twist for a 30-06. I think you will be ok with yours in 300wm. I like that - Greg Tannel agreed with my choice - seing as he aint no slouch in the gunplumber business I went with that - Krieger sent the barrel 8 weeks early. I see nothing wrong at all with your choice.

For the 300 Win Mag I was thinking of a 24" barrel, #4 contour (Krieger), 1:10 twist, chrome moly. I would consider a 25" or 26" barrel based on balance, but not velocity, considerations.

If you're having Penrod do the work he typically likes to turn his own contour from a blank ( this is my understanding) What he's doing for me is .635 at the muzzle, 26" length for a .300 Weatherby

I determine the aprox weight I want... then go for a med/light barrel and try to balance the finished rifle out in the stock. I find this way easier for me then to end up with a heavy barrel on an awkward stock. Some of my rifles are balanced to a specific scope/mount set up, but if the rifle wears irons I typicaly balance it with the irons only first. Balance to me is far more important than finished weight to a certain point.

I favor a heavier, shorter contour for my .308 barrels also. Have a #5 at 21" on my version of an LTR. Works well, and doesn't over heat too fast. GT is no slouch, that's for sure.

For the .416 Rem Mag I was thinking of a 22" barrel, #5 contour (Krieger), 1:12 twist, chrome moly. I would consider a 23" or 24" barrel based on balance, but not velocity, considerations.

For the 300 Win Mag I was thinking of a 24" barrel, #4 contour (Krieger), 1:10 twist, chrome moly. I would consider a 25" or 26" barrel based on balance, but not velocity, considerations.

Comments, critiques, suggestions, and aspersions on my character are all welcome.

I like chrome moly better in the cold, although the 410 stainless is better than 416 at low temperatures.

For the .416 Rem Mag I will be shooting 350 grain - 400 grain lead core (or partial lead core) bullets and solid monometals up to 380 grains.

For the 300 Win Mag I will be shooting 180 or 200 grain Nosler Partitions, but would consider 180 grain Barnes TSX "Ringtail" bullets.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I,m in the middle of buying another barrel for my new 300 weatherby. It has a light taper 24" barrel but I am after a 27" barrel for it for a few reasons. I wanted a rifle which is more stable to hold off hand (not super worried about 1/4" accuraccy off a bench). A few people on the board seem to agree that longer skinny barrels are more stable off hand. I also wanted more velocity ,but slightly less noise will also be a bonus. This was for my long range hunting rifle ,not my F class or tight scrub hunting rifle so long barrel length wasnt an issue. I will also be using 180 gn bullets mainly (maybe 200gn on occaision) so I will be going for another 10" twist.

That is just a touch heavier than the Krieger #3 taper. Could probably get away with that with a .308 bore.
I have a 300 Win Mag now with a 25" barrel that is .637" at the muzzle. It hangs well without being too muzzle heavy.
Good info, thanks.
