M70 short mag feed problems

I have had a M70 in .270 WSM which was originally an Ultimate Shadow (subsequently re-barreled etc). It shoots amazingly well but has never been able to cycle on a full mag. If I put 2 rounds in the mag then there are never any problems but try it with 3 and it will not cycle the first of 3 rounds.

It is a pre 64 action and I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and also does anyone know of a fix?

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Many thanks

What caliber was it before, and what exactly does the first round out of the magazine do?

Basically the bolt will ride over the top of the first round in the mag when loaded to full capacity ie 3 rounds.

It has always been a 270 WSM thats what it started out as and that is what I had it re-barreled in.

Thanks

If the magazine assembly is all original then it sounds like the mag box isn't sitting right. I would double and tripple check to make sure it is seated right.

You can draw all the diagrams in the world and all the measurements you can think of...making an action feed reliably is not a science...it is an art..I've struggled for hours to make factory feed slick as a whistle...then the customer brings out his reloads...which may be a 1/16" longer than factory...and you're back to square one! Some cartridges...(the 458 Win comes to mind) is like trying to make beer cans feed

This is a common problem with the short mag case...they work better in a push feed rifle. Lots of people have had the same issue as you and I am not sure if there is an easy fix. You may try and see if a stronger magazine spring will help.

Thanks for the advice all.

I will consider all options and work through them until I have a result.

Dear all

Just thought I would complete the thread as I went to the range yesterday to have a look at what exactly the problem was.

I am embarrassed to say that it has been a school boy error on my part. It appears that when I was loading to capacity, as I was closing the bolt on the top round, I was catching the top round (due to lack of depth left in the mag well)on the bolt and sliding it slightly forward. When cycling the action the headstamp was not engaging with the bolt hence the top round not being pushed into the chamber.

Problem solved and I now have a short mag which shoots fantastically well and also holds a full mag.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions.
