I have a 30-06 comercial mauser of recent origin that has a nice set of iron sights on it. One standing and two foldind at the the rear. Marked 100yds, 200yds, and 300yds. The rear sight has only windage adjustment via moving the sights in the dovetail. The front sight is a soldered on ramp with a bead insert. The bead insert is the shortest one I can find. The problem is that it shoots about 3 inches low with 150 grain bullets at 2800 fps at 100 yds. I would really like to shoot it with open sights for a while. I can't raise the rear sight or lower the front sight. So maybe I can go to a different bullet weight. I have two thoughts that go against each other. 1. Go to a 130 grain bullet to get more velocity and maybe shoot higher. 2. Go to heavier bullet that causes more recoil and get more muzzle lift to maybe shoot higher. Only other option is to try the 200 yds sight at 100 yds. Any body have experience with this. Any help appreciated. Thanks

I feel your pain. I wanted to hunt with a trapdoor Springfield but the darn thing shot 6" low at 50yds. I wasn't about to take a file to that rifle's sights. If those two options don't work try some foreend pressure.

Is that rear sight base soldered on, or screwed on? If it's screwed, maybe you could take it off and put a shim under it. Even if it's soldered (or sweated), I think a good 'smith could take it off and either shim it or move it farther back (up) along the taper....just a thought!

Sounds like you have a good arguement for handloading. This may very well regulate the the rifle to the sights with no other work. Harmonics (barrel vibration) will make the rifle shoot to a different point of impact. With some experimentation I think your problem will go away. I've seen P.O.I. change by as much as 10" in a .270, enough to take the impact off of the target. Most reloading books have a chapter explaining harmonics.

Trigger, can you drive out the standing sight and replace it with one that is higher? This may sound like a jury rigged solution, but you could silver solder a small piece of steel shaped to the outline of the standing sight on the front of the standing sight and file a new notch. I myself would not have a lot of confidence in open sights at 200 and 300 anyway, but 100 is sure usable.
