I am looking for a action wrench for a L46 Sako Action. Am I going to have to buy a set of blank blocks for my Brownells wrench and mill them or are there blocks available.

Have you looked at the Wilcox Action Wrench?

Brownell’s part # 959-500-000

Rick:

I have the Brownells Universal head for my Brownells wrench. It is the same or simular as the Wilcox. The Sako Action has a flat dove tail scope base on the top of both the front and back of the receiver. I worry abobut damaging this dovetail or crushing the action all together.

Longshot,

I would too!

Sounds like you may have to have a Brownells blank machined to fit.

The Wilcox also have the ‘V’ shaped cut out, so maybe it would work.

At the risk of being chastised for this, I use a 15" Crescent wrench padded with aluminum shims to protect the action. I don't like using an in-the-bore wrench for fear it may warp the action. By putting the wrench on the top and bottom, you have two parallel sides to work against.

Jim,

I totally agree with your thoughts on the in-bore wrenches being a bad idea (for any type of action)...and for actions like this type I think your cresent wrench set up sounds as good as anything else available.

Jim:

You have been posting as long or longer than I and I respect your judgement. I want chastise today. I too do not like internal wrenches for the same reasons. I considered putting the action sandwicthed between to pieces of alluminim in a mill vice and used a barrel vice to turn the barrel out of the action. A little Polish engineering.

That is the way I take off an AR type barrel. The setup is more rigid than my barrel vise.

I have used shims and a crescent before. I don't like the way the jaws on a crescent flex and therefore put more pressure on the opposite outside edges of the action bottom and dovetail. I reverse a model 70 head in my brownells wrench and use shims and longer bolts. It's nearly the same as the crescent wrench method only more secure.
