twist rate question

I am considering building a very specialized rifle, in .32-20, but with .308 bore/bullets. It seems that most bbl blanks for .308 come in either 10 or 12 inch twist. I would like to use bullets from the 110gr up to 150gr, if possible. Expected velocities would seem to range from about 1500fps to 1800+fps. In looking at the data in "Load From a Disk", it appears even the 12 inch twist is a bit fast. Basic question, would it work? Or do I need to rethink this...

Pedestal,

Go to www.benchrest.com and click on barrels in the left column. From the list generated on the right click on Bruno's, look for his barrels selection. He lists Harts and Shilen's with slower twists, I think down to 18 in .30 caliber.

Then check www.cutrifle.com and call Dan for a cut rifle barrel made to your specs in any twist from 5.5 to straight. (928)445-3655

As velocity slows, the rate of twist needed to stabilize a particular bullet increases. With your .32-20, I would think that 1/12 would be the minimum twist rate for a 150 grain bullet, especially if it is a spitzer.

Ok: Assuming that the 150 would be stabilized, would the lighter weight bullets be OVER stabilized with the same twist rate.. I don't know if I'm trying to "stretch" to far to go from 110grs to 150grs at this low velocity...
