i brought my savage fp10 that was re-barreled to a 300 wsm back to smith due to ejection problems. i printed out midway's web page that has the control feed bolt head specifically for WSM's (he used a standard magnum bolt head). my gunsmith proceeds to tell me the set up is a POS and there will be problems with ejection (as if there are not problems now). he says in order to use the "correct" bolt head, he must cut out part of the receiver to place the ejector. he still says he should mill down the opening of the receiver so there is more clearance for the brass. i then mentioned about the 300 wm to 300 wsm conversion i read in the "rifleman" magazine. they did not mention anything about cutting to receiver to install the ejector. my question is, does savage make a different receiver that has the ejector as part of the receiver or is my smith full of shit?

I'm not a big fan of Savage, I've owned them, even built a pretty nice ultalite on one, but they are not my choice, I got rid of all I had. I would call Joe DeGrande, he is a good man, I've spoke with him several times, he helped me out with some of the problems I had. The firearm industry would be better off if there were more Joe DeGrande's, he is a straight up guy and knows savage rifles. He is the best guy I have ever spoke with at any of major rifle companys.

oh my god!!!! i called savage arms and then said there is no difference in the receivers between a WSM and .308. the only difference is the bolt head. i then called a gunsmith recommended by savage and explained the problem. he also was wondering why the butcher wanted to mill a section in the receiver for the ejector or mill out a section of the receiver for the brass to clear. he recommended i send him the rifle to assess and possibly fix it (he mentioned that it might be ruined). he also told me not to shoot the rifle because he was questioning the way the butcher attached the barrel to the receiver sans barrel nut. hopefully, he can fix the rifle. if not, the butcher will be see me in court for a new .308 and a refund for the butcher job.
