The model 78 is a low cost no frills model 700.

Like stubblejumper says, the Sportsman 78 is a no frills Model 700.The only difference between it and the older walnut stocked ADL's is the uncheckered bolt handle of the 78.Usually great bargains if you can find one because a lot of guys don't realize they are a 700.Remington built them for a couple years to replace the Model 788.They realized that it was cheaper to grab 700's off the line and do them up with a lo-cost bluing job and a cheap stock rather than running a whole other manufacturing/assembly line for the 788's.This was the real reason for the discontinuance of the 788,nothing to do with accuracy,or lack of it. I bought one in 243 about 5 years ago for $260CDN,nearly new condition.Any stocks that fit the long action 700 with a blind magazine will fit a Sportsman 78 in 30-06.

I picked one up in a trade about 10 years ago. It wasn't much of a shooter until I freefloated the barrel and bedded the action, then even with a POC $20 Simmons scope, it shot under MOA. Now with a decent Leupold scope it is my favorite rifle to carry, sort of a poor-mans mountain rifle.
