The buckhorn site on the Winchester 95 is awful! The lever loop gives my middle finger a good solid bash at every shot so having the web between my thumb and forefinger shredded by the tang sight base does not create enthusiasm.

I have had a Lyman 66, for the Winchester 1886, installed on my 30-06 model 95 with good results. I may need to do the same with this rifle, but I'd like to find out if there are any alternatives, plus I'm reluctant to drill into the beautiful color on the reciever. The reproduction of the Lyman mod 22 site does not appeal because it seems crude and again drilling into the color of the reciever.

Is it possible to use the same dove tail with a sculpted base and some sort of adjustable peep type sight? Maybe drilling and tapping the bolt for some sort of reciever site?

Any suggestions sure would help.

Jim

There are some sights made that replace the open rear sight on military rifles with a peep.

Perhaps someone will post the site for you.

There was a bolt peep made for the Winchesters that is often seen on the Model 71, and occassioanlly seen on the 1895. The problem with a bolt peep is that the bolt has some play, so the sight does not return to exactly the same place every time. I would imagine that the difference in point of impact at 100 yards is on the order of an inch or two, so if you can live with that, it is a viable alternative.

I believe that XS Sight System (formerly Ashley Optical) makes a sight that fits on top of the receiver and bridges the bolt (Catalog No. WI-0017-5). However, you will need a new higher front sight blade, which is included with the rear sight. This might be an alternative for you.

ArkyPete, you need to look at the Lever Action forum. We've been talking about this very subject, specifically for the Model '95 for the last couple of weeks. Marble's has a couple of options, but if you want a peep sight, Buffalo Arms is making reproductions of the Lyman #21. Anyway, go over to the lever action forum and read the topic. You should be able to find what you're looking for there. It's under the "405 Winchester" topic. Just look at the last couple of pages.

Regards,

Tom

I have a 405 mod 95 built by Kreiger several years ago when he started building them. The sights are a NECG Masterpiece rear and a NECG Universal front ramp with large red fiber optic. Realy does a nice job. Looks very good on the rifle. The rear sight covers the dovetail cut completely.
