I see several companys make magnum mauser actions. Who do you recomend? If you buy a more expesive action will you save when you have the gun built?

With the proviso that I do not own one, let me say: I imagine you could get a CZ to feed as reliably as any of the other modern mauser type actions for a lot less money. however, there is a certain market segment that will still want one of these actions. would I? certainly because they represent the height of the modern gunmaker's ability. however, AHR builds plenty of nice CZs that get taken to the African continent every year and no one seems to complain about function or reliability yet.

YMMV

A commednt that was supposedly made by Tom Burgess " If these actions cost $2000.00, they sell like hot cakes"

They are pure Mauser...CZ just kinda got carried away with the trigger and safety

Does a 404 Jeffery need a magnum length action?

Well at least you could afford to have the hole in the bolt knob welded up. Good job. I've never seen one of those AHR custom jobs that I didn't like. I can't afford them either, but I'm working on it. I keep telling myself - quality trumps quantity - repeatedly. Big Grin

What does AHR get for theirs and what is unique about them?

I don't know their prices. They have a web page. http://www.hunting-rifles.com/

Scuzze me, I was thinking your rifle was done by AHR. The trigger and safety, and perhaps the stock was what caused me to think that. The things that are unique about the AHR rifles are too numerous to list, and the list varies depending on what the customer wants. Probably, they are not so unique compared to what can be done by other gunsmiths, regarding quality, but merely an example.

In my experiece with Wayne, the main thing unique was turn-around time, compared to my experience with other gunsmiths. The work was acceptable too, but I wasn't looking for the top utmost in custom work either. I had PacNor clone the CZ barrel contour, and make me a pre-threaded & chambered barrel in 8x57. Then I just had AHR install the barrel on a CZ medium action rifle, tweeked trued and bedded, and the results were what I hoped for. There's hundreds of gunsmiths who can do that, just finding one that's a sure thing is the problem. I don't want to send my stuff somewhere, then have to send it again, elsewhere, to have the first guy's mess-up fixed.

Another thing I liked about Wayne is that he listened to me, and after talking to him about what I wanted, I wasn't left with the hunch that it was gonna turn out different than what we talked about. And it didn't turn out different. He priced the whole project, and I knew in advance what to expect.

This was my first so called wood custom. I bought a receiver and sent it and a Shilen barrel to David Christman. One of our friends on this forum supplied one of the first available Timney triggers. Ed LaPour supplied the safety. Roger Vardy in Australia supplied the wood. David did all the work on it and it does feed well. The only blood on it so far is the armadillo that my Grandson shot with it.

FWIW, here is a link to some pictures of my CZ in .416 Rigby that I just got back from Wayne at AHR. Very satisfied.

That's certainly a fine dangerous armadillo rifle ya have there. Wink It's great that there are several good gunsmiths. I like wood, especially for dry climates. I have several CZs in wood/blue, but none are the safari model.

I'm thinking of doing up one in a McMillan stock, and some kind of protective coating on the metal, such as Black T. I think that McMillan for the safari rifle is great. It's a tough choice - wood or fiberglass. Either way, they are tough, functional, and good looking rifles.

Does a VZ 24 count as a (relatively) modern action?

The nice thing about the CZ is that there is an incredibly beautiful action on the inside. You just have to file, grind, sand and shape until you get to it.

The CZ action can be made to work as smooth as anything.I don't know what other CZ's function like as there are more than one smith who work on them. The one Ralph Martini worked on for me is really impressive and all the other actions I own, including Winchesters Rugers,Sakos and remingtons don't even come close. Before Ralph worked on mine,I thought I had one of the worst functioning actions there was-the end result was magic. That said,I still do not like the oversized and huge magazine box.IMO,5 or 6 lott rounds in a large magazine box,are far to many to be firmly held in place under the lott recoil.I would prefer to have the magazine box to be reduced in size so that it would hold no more than three rounds,as close together as possible, polished and on top of a stiffer magazine spring .Of course this would require a new stock. As Imentioned before, you also need a new barrel, trigger and striker spring.Only then is a CZ worth owning. The bolt action is only part of the puzzle. It's not that the rifle will not work otherwise, but that it will not work to a level that will give a sense of confidence of total reliability.

Maybe you should start a new thread: What is the best way to make my DG rifle hold fewer rounds?

You definitely march to the beat of a different drum(clarinet?)

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Imagine having a really nice bespoke suit made only to have the pants bottoms cut a foot too short. This is how I feel about the CZ magazine issue-a shame.IMO,there is no other action that deserves a custom, cartridge specific, one piece bottom metal or trigger guard magazine assembly made for it than the CZ action.I can't understand why no one is making and selling some.I would pay up to 500 dollars for one.As for the 404,I here that the Granite mountain action will work great for it.
