Most people who are anti muzzle break are so due to the amount of noise they make.

If the VAIS muzzle break reduces noise and recoil, better than other breaks, then why does't everyone have one?

Cost? Are they not all they're made out to be?

All muzzle brakes that are effective at reducing recoil do increase noise significantly.

I agree with Stubblejumper in that all muzzle breaks increase noise.

I will also tell you that the Vais break is an excellent product. I have one on my .300 Rem Ultra Mag. and I love it!

To top it off, Ron Bartlett is a Grade A guy.

Nuff said.

From my understanding of them (shot a Rem700VS in .22-250 w/ an original Vais brake on a friend's rifle), the brake perhaps doesn't reduce recoil as much as some other designs, but it is a significant reduction from no brake, and it isn't quite as loud as some of the more efficient brakes. Basically it's a trade off... the more gas that is directed back towards the shooter, the more recoil reduction, and the louder the gun is. The Vais brake ports some of the gas forward in a way that still dumps a lot of recoil, but isn't nearly as noisy. As to why everybody doesn't use them, well, why doesn't everybody use brand X rifle? Same reason. Different strokes for different folks.

EXPRESS....I have Vais muzzle brakes on my 3 primary hunting rifles and they all do an excellent job of reducing recoil with only a modest increase in noise.

A couple of anectodal factoids.......

My 7.82 (30-cal) Lazzeroni Patriot is quieter with the brake on it than 95% of the 300 Weatherbys without brakes I've been around and a lot quieter than something like an unbraked 30-378 Weatherby

I've never had a shooter at the next bench give me a dirty look because of my brake & in fact most of them don't notice it until I unscrew it to clean the barrel

One of the features that really separates the Vais brake from others is the absence of gas being blasted back into your face when you shoot

A Vais brake is the only brake I would consider for a big-game rifle.
