I have two actions ordered and want to pick up the bases and rings. I know that there was a lot of discussion as to the hole spacing in another thread. But was it ever stated what bases would work? I want to use two piece leupold bases. What ones should I acutely get?

I want to use Leupold dual dovetail bases on my Montana short action, and I am also uncertain about the correct part numbers to use when placing my order for bases with Bear Basin. Rod, how about sugaring-out the details on what bases will work on the 1999 Montana SA? CP.

He's already stated. Same as M70.

The model 70's, depending on the model, have two different hole spacings. It is my understanding that the MR 99 has three holes on the rear bridge to accomodate eigther.

The hole spacing is going to be the same as the M 70 magnum, which is .330 on the rear base, the front is the same as other 70's

All: We had to dump the .330 hole (rear bridge) spacing altogether. Just could not make it work with a .862 pattern.

So...THE answer is - buy any scope base setup designed for .862 rear hole spacing. This is typically the standard length M70 action. They ALL fit. We tried them to make sure.

The Long Action retains one hole from the .330 spacing for use with one-piece bases. It also has a .862 pattern properly positioned to use all of the two-piece bases mentioned above. So three holes total. When using two piece bases, the third hole is covered by the base.

Rod, this question is probably superfluous, But Talley specifies hole spacing of .860 (see Talley Bases). This as opposed to your .862... Same deal??

*EVERY* M70 we checked with gage pins came out to .862in. so we copied this (mistake or not). And then many of the bases we checked went from .865 to .860...but they all fit. So maybe .862 is in the middle?

What's more important is they are machined as a pattern +/- .002 True Position relative to each other and parallel with the axis of the bolt bore.
