I have no doubt there are several previous posts on this subject but all my search efforts were fruitless. How do I remove a dovetail front sight from the base without specialised equipment? Looking down the barrel, do I push the insert from left to right or the other way around? Thanks, Adam

Always to the right; usually.

Sometimes! But not always. If the sight has no separate ramp then all you have to do is clamp the barrel in a padded vise and go at it with a small hammer and an aluminum or brass punch. If it has a separate ramp then beating on the blade is an invitation to rip the screws out of the barrel. That's bad! If there is a screw on ramp involved, it is best left to a sight press. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

Ok, related as the same type sight. CVA Hawken I just bought. Had a black 1/16" front sight I can't see. Ordered a 3/32" Marbles white spot. IT's just a touch too large to fit the dovetail. Which is best to file on to make it fit? Might be .010" off. I got the original out ok. I don't have a dovetail file, so it'll go to the local smith, or borrow his file if he don't want to do it then. I'd like to shoot the gun. I'd buy a file, but, postage will double the cost as it did for this $12 sight Midway charged $19 to get it to me in a 6" square box instead of small padded envelope.
