Hi all, a friend asked me and I wanted to pass on the question. He has an older ruger 10-22 and he wants to convert it to 17 Mach Two. He found a 17 HMR barrel and wonders if he installs it on his ruger will it chamber/feed the smaller round without issues? I did a limited search and noted pressure issues, will thta be a problem? Will his older 10/22 handle 17 HMR with only a barrel change?

Thanks,
Eterry

Good luck and good shooting.

there are barrel kits sold with accessories to handle the increased recoil to the action- try Cabelas, etc for a look.

Eterry, you can't shoot the 17M2 in a 17HMR chamber. It's the same relationship as a 22LR and 22WMR.

Just changing the barrel to a 17M@ won't work. The Ruger 10/22 in 22LR won't handle the 17M2 without modification to the bolt. As I understand it, the 22 bolt does not have enough mass causing it to open early and blow out the case. I haven't tried it myself, mind you, I'm taking the word of folks in the industry that I've talked to.

If all else fails, call Freddy. And while you have him on the phone, say Hi for me.

No!
The 17 Mach 2 is developed off the 22 LR cartridge and the 17 HMR is base on the 22 mag cartridge. You need a action built for the magnum cartridge to change out to the 17 HMR. Magazine lenght, bolt travel ( I believe) and pressures are all more then is available in the std 10/22.

If he wants to go to the 17 Mach2 he can but the bolt and recoil spring will also need replacing as noted by Tin Can.

He can not fire 17 HMR ammo in a 17 Mach2 chamber so if you go with the take off barrel you found it will have to be rechambered

You can put a 17HMR barrel on a late model 10/22 Magnum , but you cannot shoot 17Mach2 in a 17HMR barrel. The 17HMR is a 22 Mag necked down to a 17 cal bullet, while a 17Mach is a 22long rifle case necked down for the 17 bullet.
