I'm looking for a smith that can correct the 3 position safety on a left hand dakota I recently purchased. Despite the sellers assertion that the gun had " no issues", it in fact does. The safety, when in the middle position will slide into the fire position frequently when you manipulate the bolt, obviously a dangerous situation. I'm not interested in returning the gun as nicer left handed rifles ( or any left handed rifle these days) can be hard to find and it fits my girlfriend and in a caliber that I love, 284 win . I'm aware that many custom gunmakers could do this job but doubt that this repair or replacement is something they may be interested in doing, but maybe not. I could use some help here otherwise I might have to find a right handed girlfriend. Thanks all .

Are replacement levers available? (might a Winchester fit?) If so it ought to be a pretty easy swap if you are handy.

If they are anything like Mauser 3 position side swing safeties there is a lateral groove in the shaft of the lever, with slight detents at each position that a round-head, spring loaded plunger engages. Most likely this area is just worn, or the spring may be weak.

There is probably a small roll pin you will need to drive out in order to disassemble. Just be careful taking it apart, spring loaded plungers have a way of flying across the room when they are suddenly liberated!

Hi,
I believe Jim Kobe is the go-to guy for M70 safeties
behind which Dakota is not far. I have installed
Dakota and they are not difficult. As said earlier, look at your detent dimples closely. Use Dykem or felt marker and observe that leaving witness marks.
Give the shroud and safety a solvent/compressed air treatment and oil lightly as a triage before removing any metal.
Luck,
Stephen
