What is the real world reports on "Blue Wonder Bore Cleaner". Does it really clean copper fouling or should I stick with tried-and-true soaking with Hoppes over several days?

This topic has probably been asked before, but when I do a search I seem to get every topic where the word blue and the word wonder has been used.

I don't have a real world report, but I have used it some, from what little I have used it, I would have to say it works better than Hoppes. I don't think it works are good as barnes, but it sure is easy to use and doesnt get all over the place.

I've tried one tube of it and will not buy it again.

It seems to clean well enough, but it is a stiff enough gel that I find it a real pain in the kazoo to spread evenly on a patch, fibre brush, or bore mop. Of course, my middle name is "Clumsy", so you may not have the same experience with it.

But, with my limited manual dexterity, I'll just continue to use "Wipe Out", Shooter's Choice, or Sweets, as each situation demands.

I use it, and like it. On some occasions I still need to use Sweet's.

I bought a tube of it but wont be using it in my bore, I thought I might try some as a pre-rust blue cleaning soloution.

The first thing I noticed about it was the unmistakable smell of ammonia.. As such I would be suprised if it didnt get out copper, better oil 'er good afterwards though!

Don't know about Blue Wonder...but I do know a little about your other problem with doing searches on the internet.

If you want to eliminate the problem you describe place the words within quotation marks: ie., "Blue Wonder." According to my info and experience that seems to tell the search engine to look for the two words together, rather than each word on it's own.

Something to do with Boolean computer protocol or some other Geek BS that most of us mortals over the age of 40 don't know about unless some kid tells us!

As for bore cleaner you can make the damned stuff for a hell of allot less than you can buy it for and the home made stuff works just as good. Try out your new found Boolean protocol and type in: "Ed's Red Bore Cleaner" and use the recipe they hand out for free. You can also find the basic recipe in Hatchers Notebook.

Matt,

I ordered a tube, but I probably won't bother getting another. The consistency is sort of runny snot, so I only use it outside. The performance isn't better than the other cleaners I have.

John Schaefer did some comparison testing of bore cleaners. He didn't test Blue Wonder, but he did cover quite a few of the others -- including Ed's Red.

He keeps gallon jugs of that stuff around, but I don't think its performance is worth the trouble to mix and store. Again compared to what I use. YMMV.

Hoppes is good for smelling, but Sweets cleans jacket fouling way better.

With the introduction of "Wipe Out" I see no need for any other copper removing product...

AMEN!
Ray, I don't understand why the whole gun shooting community isn't raving about this stuff. I just spray the stuff in, lay the gun on it's side, come back in a couple of hours or usually next morning, run 2 or 3 dry patches through...DONE. Total cleaning time per gun is about five minutes. No chemical smell, no BRUSHES, no hundreds of strokes with the brushes, no using 1/3 of a bag of patches per gun. I've given away my Sweet's, my Shooter's Choice, my Butch's, and my J-B. I still use Hoppe's about every other cleaning because the Wipe-Out doesn't do as great a job on powder as it does on copper. This stuff works so well that the first time I used it, I reapplied it because I couldn't believe it would work that easily. It did!

On a shelf above my gun cleaning area I seem to have a bottle or tube of everything, including some Ed's Red I made up a year or two ago. Have not tried Wipe Out but will bite on the next trip to the big store. I always seem to reach for the Hoppes when doing general gun cleaning.

Matt, I don't think you are going to find it in any of the stores around here. At least I haven't. I ordered mine from Midway. Bob over at Michigun said he was going to stock it, but he didn't have it last time I checked. Believe me once you try it you'll be shocked. Cleaning guns was the only thing I hated about hunting and shooting. Now it's NBD.

What you will find in the stores is Break-Free Foam Cleaner. As far as I can tell, it works just like Wipe-Out.

Amazing stuff, and you can get it retail.

I have used the Wipe Out recently. My experience is the same as some others have stated. This stuff cleans with no effort on my part at all,...foam it up,..walk away,..patch it out tomorrow. I have gone behind it with Sweets,..just to see how well the wipe out does,....and there was NOTHING on the sweets patch when it emerged. I'll use sweets to break in a barrel,..but from now on I think I will be using Wipe Out.
