I have a Win 70 XTR in 222( push feed). My problem is that the plunger on the bolt face is so strong that the extracted case mouths after firing come out quite bent with burrs and scratches on them. It seems that it would be a simple matter of pushing the retaining pin out and weakening the spring a little at a time? Can anyone give me a step by step and any tricks with reguards to this.

You have to drive out the ejector retaining pin while CAREFULLY controlling the ejector. As you know the spring is quite powerful. Be sure to WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. If you have access to a vise with padded jaws use it. The ejector may be launched into parts unknown if care is not taken. After the spring is shortened a bit the ejector is replace and the cross pin is reinstalled. Be sure to note the cut out on the ejector for the cross pin. When the ejector is reinstalled the cut out must line up with the retaining pin. When replacing the shortened spring be sure to put the cut end in the hole first since you will have ground off one of the dead ends of the spring.

Growler, Bob has provided the correct detail of disassembly and reassembly. You may consider replacing the spring with a weaker version rather than corrupt the factory spring. Removing any surface face of either end may over time become detrimental to the spring's well or perhaps the ejector's lever. Wolf's sell's a hugh variety of springs for may firearms. They may sell the correct diameter and shorter length having the correct face on either end of the spring. Just an alternative to consider when weighing in the cost in replacement of major components.... ------------------ Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.
