I picked up a Winchester Pre 64 action the other day in good shape other than the bolt face being buggered by someone cutting a ring in the face at a slightly different angle than flat near and around the firing pin hole. It's not too deep- very unsightly chatter cut- I have a minty .270 barrel that I would like to screw on- and hey, the date code even matches My question is: Where can I get or make a bolt face lap without sacrificing a barrel? Anyone care to "rent" one out to me? The Manson bolt face lap requires the threads to be recut to 1 1/16th- so it is not being considered and my lathe is off limits until I get some new nuts... Any wisdom appreciated.

I use Dave Manson’s tooling and have found him to be a really, nice, easy and helpful guy to work with. You might give him a call and ask his suggestions or if he can make you a tool holder with your thread pattern. The problem with trying to face a bolt without using a lathe or a Manson type rig is that you can’t be sure you are getting it square to anything. You may end up with a really pretty bolt face that is on an angle to the bolt body, locking lugs and chamber. You can also alter the headspace too much if you get carried away with your lapping/cutting/polishing. That’s why the Manson bolt facing tool is used as the last step in the reciever blue-printing process (and before barreling and head spacing) after everything else has been recut and squared to the centerline of the receiver.

Debee, I looked on Dave Manson’s website and he does have a tool holder for his bolt facing cutter with Winchester threads.
