Hi,

I have a pre-64 with a damaged firing pin tip. The bolt face and firing pin hole are good, so it was probably swapped in before I got the rifle.

Question: If I clean up the pin , I will be only about 35 thou protrusion. Is there any way to let the firing pin out another 15 thou or so by grinding the cocking piece back or something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

don't mess with the firing pin as you will alter the sear engagement and mess it all up. I think your best bet will be to find another firing pin or to have the firing pin welded up to make it longer. Properly hardened it might work for you. The cocking piece/sear geometry is real critical. Many of the pre-64 model 70's that are screwed up have had an amateur mess with that critical angle arrangement and have regretted it later.

thanks for the info!

I'll just buy a wisner replacement, probably cheaper than welding and fooling with it

Firing pin protrusion distance is controlled at the juncture between the cocking piece and firing pin as it rests on the bolt shroud. It does not bottom out on the retaining rings of the firing pin spring, or the shoulder on the firing pin.
Under the circumstances, you'll need to replace your firing pin and cocking piece assembly, then have it properly fitted for correct sear engagement by a competent gunsmith.

Any other method would be extremely unwise, as well as being unsafe.
