The 98/22 action looks the same as the VZ24 action to me.

Please don't bugger up another 98/22. There were only 60,000 built at most, and they're quite scarce now. They're very nice rifles in their original form.

While millions of Mausers were made, the supply is not infinite. They're still out there, check the online auction sites. Just don't expect to get one for $49.95. Those days are gone forever.

a little over a year ago I bought a 98/22 mauser for $59 bucks from SOG, bore is frosty but the action is rust free, I should have bought a truckload at that price.

The VZ24s at BIG5 were much the same, but the 98/22s varied allot: 5 would be trashed and 1 would be very good. I got one with a Golden colored wood stock, very good metal, and shiney grooves at the muzzleSmiler

I wonder why the HUGE price gap in the 98/22 vs. the VZ-24?!? $300 difference?!? I might as well purchase a MODERN CZ! Frowner

When I got a Mauser in 1965, they were $30 for the surplus 1893 models and more for 1898s.

In 1999 Century was selling 1903 Turks for 4/$100 and Big5 was selling them for $50, I got dozens.

Then when the 1938 Turks came along in 2000, they had better bores, and I loaded up.

Then in late 2000, the VZ24s were $70 at BIG5, and they had large threads. I loaded up for a lifetime.

I have been buying VZ24 sporadiclly since. I got some without bolts for $45 from Century this summer of '05.

I seem to have Mauser madness.
My Springfields, Win 70s, Rem 70s, Sav 110s, etc. are just stripped down poor imitations of 98 Mausers.

Everytime I sporterize a 98, I need to buy two more, as if I will live forever and run out.
