It's probably a whole bunch of data about the gun that would take way too much room to stamp into the barrel or receiver, so they use that pattern which I would guess a computer eye can see and read in a millisecond... | |||

It looks like a 2D/3D barcode. We use them on products at work, but in printed form on the label. You can stuff a whole lot of information into a small space with those. | |||
