It's probably a whole bunch of data about the gun that would take way too much room to stamp into the barrel or receiver, so they use that pattern which I would guess a computer eye can see and read in a millisecond...

It looks like a 2D/3D barcode. We use them on products at work, but in printed form on the label. You can stuff a whole lot of information into a small space with those.

They link the barcode information to you in the registration database so that when you discard it at the scene of a crime they just scan it and it tells the police who to arrest. It should do wonders for fighting crime.

It is a sensor that automatically reports to the fish and game department any game that you shoot out of season. You can also buy a cord for it that allows you to plug it into the wall and it will clean the barrel for you.
