I need some help with this barrel. The description states; "pinprick erosion clustering to form solid erosion is visible on the receiver and rear half of the barrel." "The bore is gray and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. " Can exterior erosion effect barrel accuracy? Can this be a deal stopper...I can't inspect it in person as this is a auction. This is a .22 rimfire with a inch muzzle. Looks like the erosion occured along the stock line. Salt wood? Thanks

Not Erosion; it is Corrosion; different processes. No, outside rust/corrosion won't hurt the bore. Erosion is caused by a mechanical/chemical/thermal process wearing away of the surface of the metal, as in hot powder gasses erode the bore steel. Corrosion of steel is the oxidizing (a chemical process), usually called rust. Bore is Gray; would cause me not to buy it; it should be silver. It might be "eroded" in the bore too, meaning corroded, meaning, rusted. .22 rimfires do not erode much, if at all. If the bore is not perfect, it is from Corrosion. A bad thing, usually, inside the bore.

If it's corroded on the outside, it's probably corroded on the inside!
