Installing front sight band with loctite?
I'd like to put an NECG band on my Mark X 458 after I cut the barrel back; my concern is that the barrel is a light contour and I will likely not be able to drill and tap a hole. I am not confident in my ability to silver solder, and would like to do the installation myself. Can a barrel band sight be attached with red loctite? I've done d&t installations so I have a set up for levelling the action and aligning the sight, I'm just wondering if red loctite will hold up under recoil.

If you're gonna use Loctite, I'd recommend 380 Black Max.

quote:
BLACK MAX #380 ADHESIVE - Instantly glue on shotgun sights, sight ramps or make fast repairs to vent ribs and beads. Adheres instantly, cures fast. Toughened with elastomers for greater resistance to impact and vibration, and for increased shear strength. Flat black color.

The "instant" part is a slight drawback...If you're not "on the money", you're screwed! The red, for my part, gives just a little time to adjust. Those wimpy set screws...I replace with tw 6-32's...matter of fact, on my 500 Jeff, being a takedown, if I ever have to realign the ramp, I rely only the set screws...Of course, I believe in wearing a belt AND suspenders, so I cut a slight groove in the barrel where the set screws bear....probably more than you really wanted to know!

okay, it can be done.. sure, and they sell products for it .. i bought several of the super super glues (i like hightech adhesives in other applicaitons) to test them. 380 works fine... I don't use these on guns, even though designed for it. all of the black max products have elastomers in them that allow a certain amount of flex, as "super glue" shatters without them

here's the PROBLEM... if you ever have to take them off, it's torch and heat and you MUST wear a chemical mask as the glue is bad stuff when burning

Loctite isn't as forgiving as solder when it comes to gaps between parts, so a good tight fit is crucial. Because of the very small operating window with 271 Loctite, you have to have everything set to go without any problems.

I would recommend practicing getting the banded ramp on the barrel and aligned until you can do it quickly and without any pause, because like Duane mentioned, once you apply the loctite, you have a very small operating window for which to work.
