I am looking for a shaper cutter or horizontal cutting bit that I can use in a mill for cutting a double 1/4 inch radius in the stock tip. I have an old "vertical" router bit, but it is a pain to use. It cuts on the end of the shaft, meaning I need to move the stock in a jig over the router table. I want to cut on the side so I can use the mill. At one time, Woodline advertised a "point cutting roundover bit" that cut this profile, but I can't find the one I want on their web site. Does anyone know of a current source for this bit?

Thanks in advance.

Roger

I got mine at the "Woodworker's Store" here in Bllomington. If you want I can check if they still carry them. Email with particulars if you like.

I mount the stock, tip up on an angle plate and hang it over the table and cut straight across. With the Ebony, I use a 1/2" end mill and make a cut .250 short of center and come from both sides and .250 deep. Fits like a glove.

Thanks for the responses. Jim, this is very much like what I currently have and need to resharpen or replace. (scroll down to point cutting roundover bit)

What I am looking for is a way of cutting this horizontally. I would like to clamp the stock horizontally with the cutter turning vertically. The cutter is similar to a double angle milling cutter only with a double inside radius.

I have the MSC "Big Book" but not a current McMaster Carr. I can't find it on their web site. I saw this several months back, I thought it was on this site. I can't seem to find it with a search.

When I saw it I thought that would be much easier to line up, keep rigid and square and have a cleaner cut.

I think what you need is that cutter mounted in an angle head on the Bridgeport, if you have one

It has been somewhat frustrating to KNOW that I have seen this cutter, but could not find a source. I found a picture in Tom Turpin's book on the Miller Rifle company, pages 36 and 37. I think I will call them in the am to see if they have a source. If all else fails, I will turn one on the lathe from mild steel, then mill out the teeth, relieve the backside and harden. For the few cuts needed, that should hold up fine.

If any other stockmakers know, I would appreciate any source.

Thanks

Roger
