I bought a 22-250 for a pretty good price knowing the crown didnt look the greatest. I was wondering If any one has had any luck with the hand crowning tools you can buy at midway or brownells. this is a heavy barrel and I would like a 11 degree target crown. I havent loaded any thing up for the rifle yet and plan on doing that before I do anything. here is a pic. there is one smith I would consitter taking this to in the area but he is swamped with stuff and would take awile.

shoot it as-is....see how it shoots.....it may or may not need repair. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." JJ, I would shoot this rifle first to establish it's current state of affairs. Then: I would get a round headed brass screw and some 600 wet or dry paper, and some oil. Pressing with a cordless drill the 600 paper will remove the burrs which are visable in your picture. If not the 600 paper, lapping compound on the brass screw will work as well. For myself, years ago I acquired a piece of 1/4 inch round stone with a ball like end. Putting it in a cordless drill and lightly turning with careful attention to alignment can make a new rifle out of this crown. Or you can be a gentleman and spend the money, or the time and money and get the same results! Good shooting. Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! I would have it done,by a professional gunsmith. As anyone can see its got two dinks in it already that can effect accuracy.I would have a recessed target crown or a 11 degree as you stated. IMHO van

If you missed the recent posts on the effect of damage to the crown of a 22 cal, I suspect Saeed could dig them up for you. He has data on the effect on group size from using a hand tool to remove crown damage. I suggest you wait for his next set of data (read this) before you begin. https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9411043/m/234100006
