I rarely find them to need it. I might dress them a bit but no serious grinding.

Some have had the receiver crest ground off by the country of origin, thus changing the shape. As DPCD stated you can dress it. Some use a crystalon stone(two sided sharpening stone) by hand with a side to side stroke following the radius.

When mounting scope bases I like to place the base on the receiver in it's approximate future location and use a dial caliper to measure from the receiver bottom flat to the flat of the base fore and aft. Then do the same for the rear base. If the receiver ring has been carelessly ground (as many are) the base will be uneven and lower than commercial bases account for. In these cases after D&T'ng I secure the base loosely and use the caliper to determine proper shimming to make it level on the x and y axis'. Then I roughen the bottom of the base, apply wax to the receiver, and bed it with Acraglas. Do the rear first and then the ring, raising it with the bedding to match heights.

Tip: Monitor the cure time and consistency of the bedding. When it becomes stiff enough to just dent with a finger nail, use the sharpened edge of an old credit card to slice off the squeeze-out. This saves a ton of clean-up time.
