I want to remover the front sight on a pre-64 model 70 featherweight. it looks to me that it must be soldered on; could one of you smart guys verify this before I take the torch to it?

Yes they are soldered on.

If it is the early FWT, with the stippled surface, then it is silver soldered on.

The later common ramp with the serrations are soft soldered on.

Mine is a '59, and has the grooved, or serrated finish, so it should pop right off.
