I purchased a fine shooting, bull barrel 22-250 years ago, it is my favorite gun. When I finally get enough wear in the barrel, what could it be reworked into with a rebore? This stuff is foreign to me.

yes, you can have it rebored but it's about the same price just to rebarrel.

If you rebarrel, you can go back to the 22-250 again!.....or .243 or 260 Rem or many other rounds.

Probably move it up to .243, as it would increase my options for hunting.

beerYou can rebore and chamber it to a 250-3000.It may or may not be as expensive as a new barrel. Chambering for the .250 would take minimum time and a reputable GS will pass the savings on to you. beerroger

Apparently there would be many chamberings available to me. This is comforting as I could go with whatever chambering that trips my string at the time. I realize the 22-250 started out as a 25 caliber. It would be nice to have that 25-3000, as I have no friends with one. What is the 3000 for?

The 3000 was the advertised velocity of the factory round loaded with an 87gr bullet at that time (1915). So, a 250-3000 is a cartridge loaded with an 87gr bullet with a muzzle velocity of 3000fps, which was quite the hot round back in the day.

Without knowing what your rifle action is, it is probably an action that will take the .243 round so really you have heaps of choices starting with .243, .257, .260, 7mm-08, .308 and higher.

You can also stick with .22-250 or its parent 250-3000 but that last is now considered an almost obsolete cartridge.

Reboring is quite possible but if you are hunting you would be better with a lighter barrel. You could have the existing barrel turned down but I reckon you would be better off with a new barrel.

Next issue is the stock, is it suitable for hunting? If you rebarrel or re-profile the existing barrel you will have a large gap.

You might be better off with a new stock, it never ends!

Oops! The .257 may be too long as its a 57mm case instead of 51mm like the rest of the "08" based rounds I mentioned. There is the .25-08 wildcat but .260 is a factory round and known for accuracy.

Also possible your action is full length meaning 06 based cases...

Originally it was intended to drive a 100gr. bullet at 3000 fps. It was found that this could not be safely done so the bullet was reduced to 87gr.First of all Craig is right ,it was the adveryised velocity of the 87gr. bullet.

Today with a strong bolt action and adequate throating to seat the 100 gr. bullet out some and using proper modern propellants the 3000fps can be met. Roll Eyesroger

There is some truth to this statement, but if you reload it makes no difference. In the last 4 or 5 months I screwed a Shaw 250-3000 long throated, 24", light weight barrel on one of my Stevens Mod. 200s and am enjoying the peediddle out of it. It is totally free floating in that tupper ware stock but it does <MOA with a number of loads.

If you're not into reloading the Kiwi's got it right. Winkroger
