Howdy Boys and Girls,

This may/probably has been talked about, but I came across a tidbit of information that may be of interest.

When I first saw pictures of the Remington produced 338 Lapua Magnum, I was so, totally, yabba-dabba-doo on the concept. Just mill out a long action, replace the bolt with one from Remington and bolt on bottom metal that uses a British style AICS drop Box magazine.

Well, there just is not enough metal in the standard Remington Action. Remington even realized that as well. They have been making/sourcing a slightly fatter and longer receiver to prevent a Kaboom syndrome from starting up.

The whole thing sounded too good to be true, and it was.

That's why option one was a Stillers action And that got put on the back burner when I took a Savage 112 in trade. $400 in parts and I'll be up and running.

I'll beat you to it.
the savage is a very modular weapon. Change the bolt head and barrel and you're good to go. On mine since it's an older version with a larger firing pin I needed to buy a new firing pin assembly too.

The action is plenty long enough to handle to rounds. I don't have feeding issues as it's a solid bottom receiver. For what I'm doing thats fine.

Sure I'd like to have a Accuracy international .338 lapua but that is just ridiculous.

I have a 700 Remington in .338 Lapua in the gun safe that my son ordered from the Remington Custom Shop. I haven't measured it to compare with a standard long action 700. He added the Accuracy International stock and bottom metal with their detachable magazine. Very accurate rifle.

Ok so it's not exactly that easy.
The new bolt head does not have a key cut in it to match the bolt body. So I have to cut the keyway. No big deal but not drop in replacement either.

My take off barrel is on the classifieds

Remington offers a .338 Lapua in their 700PSS line I have seen several and shot one of them. The bolt face is opened up so much that they use an M-16 extractor instead of the standard Remington.

Not much meat left on that boltface though....looks a bit "hinky" too me but have seen no bad reports....

You should see the face of the Savage bolt. Very thin.

Those are the actions I was told have been beefed up for safeties sake.
