Gentlemen,
Is it fairly simple to change a Mauser 96 to cock on open rather than close and can anyone point me to a smith that can do it?

tiggertateThere are DIY kits you can buy from Dayton Traister (Brownell's) but may need minor fitting and definitely refinishing. Consists of a replacement cocking piece and firing pin spring. Jim Kobe can do it and also convert the safety to side lever. Can't recall if it will be two position or three but it beats the flag safety on a scoped rifle.
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I have to agree with Duane in recommending Ed Lapour. Most folks that install these conversions don't have the ability to cut the proper helix for the cocking cam on the bolt. This results in an overly stiff bolt lift.

Consider this; It ain't broken!. Nothing wrong with cock on closing. It has advantages over cock on opening. Which is why the British never adopted it. I never understood why Americans can't learn to use it.

I agree, the only "upgrade" to my 96's is a 98 type shroud.
I've never felt hampered by them cocking on closing and never had trouble in the field adapting.
