Reading your post on the M1A conversion got me to thinking about a similar project my friend and cooked up a while ago, converting a perfectly good BAR to .458WinMag....food for thought...or elephants on the run....

Curtis,

I have often considered that conversion myself. Fitted with a 20" barrel that would be a very nice woods rifle for those pesy deer that refuse to die when it with a more modest round.

Did you and your friend actual do the conversion? If so let me know how it turned out. As I said that is another potential project that has sat so far in the "when I have too much money laying around I should do this" category.

If I remember correctly, "Guns & Ammo" did this conversion from a 7mm Mag BAR about 20/25 years ago. It seemed a simple conversion from the article, and of course, they were all goofy about what a swell project it was. You could use any magnum cased BAR to do this. The biggest problem is the tweaking of the magazine to insure proper feeding.

This makes more sense to me than converting an M1A to .358 Winchester. :-)
