Patch Box on a Bolt Gun

I am building a mexican mauser with quick detachable XS ghost ring sights. I have been brainstorming for a means of storing the sight when it is detached from the rifle. It won't fit in a trapdoor grip cap. My solution is to install a patch box like those found on a muzzleloader. I have ordered the following product http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(lhw1p1553x4nhizeywuvv5...9&PARTNUM=PB-HENRY-I. It will be polished, blued and inlet into the buttstock next to the recoil pad. Any thoughts as to how this will look?

I believe the word for it is an anachronism, but if you like it who cares.

JMO, but I think it would look like pan hammered shit. If you really want to carry the sight "on the rifle", I'd forego the recoil pad and use a trapdoor buttplate.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and have an extra magazine for it which I carry on the sling in a leather box which I made. Wherever the gun goes, the sling goes, and wherever the sling goes, the magazine goes. Kudude

Go for it. Leave the "Sticks in the Mud" behind. After all it's your rifle.

I agree with Bill Soverns. A trap butt plate would serve you well and not look like a throw back. Biesen makes a good one. There is also a removable recoil pad and you could hollow out an area in the center for the sight. I think things like this should fit into the rifle and be invisible if possible and not stick out like a sore thumb. And sorry to say, that is what I think it will look like.

Another thought. You can install a trap butt plate and add this later if you don't like the look, or the non look as it is. You can't do that if you install that thing and decide you don't like it.

Your rifle but you asked for opinions. I don't consider myself a stick in the mud and do think I have a good concept of what makes a good looking stock and you can "go for it". If I thought it was forward thinking and innovative I would say so. I don't.

Don't they make a flip top metal grip cap that would be perfect for such a sight?

I hadn't really considered it before but I think it might look better and be as convenient if placed in the bottom of the forend. This providing the frend is sufficiently full that it isn't weakened too much. Regards, Bill.

I did some checking and a grip cap box isn't big enough. The trap door but plate looks great and if the rifle was for me, I would go that route.

This is a rifle for my 10 year old son and it is starting out with the length of pull measured for my son and a 3/8 inch pad. It will grow as my son grows through the addition of thicker pads and spacers.

I did some looking and found another trap that looks better than the one I linked to above. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(2rziqraf54bfghakaxhdfj...PORTING-JAEGER-SWAMP. What do yall think about this one.

Your 2nd choice does look better than the first, but a patch box on a modern rifle just doesn't look right to me. Why not make a small leather pouch attached to a leather thong and have your son wear it around his neck under his clothing while hunting. He'd probably never loose it and he might even think it's cool.

I think Craigster has a good sugestion there, if you are willing to risk it not being on him when he has picked up the rifle in a hurry and run out of camp some day in pursuit of game spotted on the horizon.

Another possibility (which I also DON'T like) but would be slightly less obvious than a patch box, would be the cover for a cartridge trap such as is sometimes found on the bottom of the buttstock on older Germanic-style rifles.

Instead of drilling cartridge holes underneath, try carefully inletting a hole to exactly fit the sight, and wrap the sight in something so it won't rattle and won't be marred when stored in place. Most of them seem to cover about three cartridges, so you could also drill holes for two cartridges, and a space for the sight, whatever turns your/his crank.

I seem to remember a trap that fit into the botton of the stock that would hold three to five cartrages. I remember that a home gunsmithing book had plans for it. something like this might be what you need. Sorry that I don't have a picture. It was a hinged trapdoor that was inletted into the heel of the stock and looked like an extention of the butt plate. Maybe one of our better spoken gents can tell you what I am ttrying to discribe.
Good Luck

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?
