I have got the itch to do some work on my turkish mauser I want it to stay in the back seat of my truck for shooting mostly coyotes/varmits it seem Ive read its cheap to convert to 8mm-06 I called a lot of smiths in my area the only one that Ive found so far wanted 125$ for that much money I would rather buy a cheap barrel in 35whelen and if not much more I wouldnt mind the improved version of either I know there is nothing wrong with the 8x57 I just want to be different So I guess my questions are Does any body know of reasonable priced smith in Houston,TX. Area Or one I could ship to? Witch would be the best route? 8mm-06 8mm-06 A.I. 35 whelen 35 whelen A.I. For this rifle I would like to keep it pretty cheap And spend a bit more for my next project Yugo m48 I want I 7mm maybe wsm or 7x57A.I. For deer Hunting

That's actually a pretty reasonable price for pulling a barrel, cutting the finish chamber, and reinstalling. You said you wanted a truck gun for varmints. The 8X57 is probably not the best choice for longer shots. If you really want to modify your Mauser, I would install an Adams and Bennet barrel from Midway in one of the .22/.243/.25 calibers. If you want it done right, this would involve: Checking the bolt and action lugs for proper contact and correcting if necessary Installing and finish cutting the rough chambered barrel. Bending the bolt handle. Replacing the safety with a two position. Installing scope mounts (new barrels usually don't come with sights, although they can be added) A trip to the hot blue tanks. If you're paying someone else to do the work, you will usually find you could have purchased a decent used Remington, Winchester, Ruger, etc. for what you have into a Mauser rebuild. I'm not trying to talk you out of doing your project, just speaking from my experience. Ryan

go with the .257 Roberts, it's really sweet in a Mauser

I made a nice '06 out of a Turk. Works great. Enjoyed the project. Wouldn't do it again. By the time you finish, you have more money into it than buying a decent used rifle in the caliber you want. My advice is to enjoy your Turk for what it is. Spend your money on a good used .243 Savage, or something similar, for coyotes and such. A Swedish Mauser is actually a real decent, all around gun if you're looking for accuracy. The SKS isn't as accurate, but will do 4" groups at 100, and can be "fed" on $.08=$.10 per round, and is a tremendous amount of fun... sort of a grown-up's semiauto .22.
