Hello,
I have inherited a Winchester model 290 rifle.
I would like to disassemble it enough to give the action a good cleaning.
I have located an illustrated parts list of a composit of the models 250,255,270,275 and 290.
I have never seen one of these guns before.
Can someone explain how to do this?
Thanks,
Frank

Franke--

I havent had one apart in 30 years but I think I remember.

Push the plastic pin out through the side and the trigger group comes out.

There should be a plastic strut with a recoil spring wrapped around it behind the bolt. Pull back on the nose and slip it out of the socket.

Lift the bolt up and take the bolt handle out. That releases the bolt. remove it.

I don't reccommend taking the trigger group apart unless you're familiar with torsion hammer springs.

I hope those are the right directions..

J Belk,
Thanks,a bunch.
Things like this used to be a welcome challenge;now they are a necessary evil.
I don't intend to take down any more then I absolutely have to.

Mr. Belk is absolutely correct, you don't want to take it apart any further!!!! [Eek!] Been there, made that mistake! [Big Grin]
Adfter I got mine back from the gunsmith [Roll Eyes]
That's as far as I ever took it apart again!
They can get pretty caked-up with powder residue, at little solvent, blast of air, light oiling afterwards, you're good to go!
I did take a piece of fine emorey cloth to the seare though, just enough to smooth out the rough surface, made for much nicer trigger until it got stolen along with my Truck.

Hey,Guys,
The advise was excellent, and the takedown (limited version)went smoothly.
But,I,as usual, sprayed the trigger group with carburater cleaner.A white substance formed, that clung to the part.I sprayed the mess with Teflon/oil to get it out.It developed into a pain in the rear.I had to scrub it out,.
Are those parts made of plastic?
