To install this requires a very sturdy drill press with vise or a good milling machine (that's what I used) in order to cut the notch in the back of the bolt for the locking plunger to fit. It also requires that a radius be gound/cut into the sear to accomodate the shaft of the safety. If you have decent mechanical skills and the right tools, it's easy.

I have done a few with the Gentry stainless steel safeties. Not any harder than any other M70 safety job. But there is the rub-some drop right in and you have to wrestle some of them with a death grip. Loos tolerences on the ends of the bolts mean it will always be a job that could require a good bit of work. If you do a search, you will find posts blasting and praising every single brand of M70 safety out there. Sometimes the tolerences stack against you, and soemtimes they go your way.

The Gentry unit is very good, and they will wlak you through any problems you may have on the phone. If they don't pick up, leave a message and they will call you right back.

NECG has a CM version that you can blue. The Reckenagle stuff they carry is good and equal to Gentry.

Ed Lapour also has a CM saftey that can be blued. His site does not have prices on it it seems, but last I talked to him it was a good bit (like $75-100) more than the others. Basically the same safety, but if you want to be able to tell soemone you have a LaPour safety, go for it! I have talked to Ed on the phone and he seems like a real nice guy and I would love to meet him soem day and patronize his business.

Have you ever fit a M70 safety? You really need to know what you are doing to be sure the rifle is safe after the installation. If installed incorrectly, the rifle becomes an accident waiting to happen. But if you dive off into it and get stuck or have soem questions, you can post here and folks will be glad to give you some pointers. I think the modification you are talking about making on your rifle is a good one and I heartily reccomend it.

Good luck! thumb

I think this sounds a little past my skill level. I will look aroung and find someone to do it I guess. The only smiths we have locally are more parts changers than upgrade people. One of them was going to rebarrel a project for me then said it would take 2 months because he didn't have the tools to ream a chamber.
I told him I'd rent the reamer but he said he didn't have a lathe. If there is anybody one od ya'll could recommend it would really appreciat it. Thanks for your time.

You can get the Timney 3 position trigger and safety assembly from Brownells and it is a drop in. Previously the parts cost about 35 bucks from Timney but now all they sell are the complete assemblies. If you have a newer remington you'll have to get the bolt handle cut to accomodate the safety arm.

SempreElk" I don't think he is looking for a trigger.

I have to chime in here on this one. I have installed a bunch of the three position ones and will state emphatically that I will Never do another Gentry. Go with LaPour and be satisfied.

Sendf me an email if you want it done.

Interesting comment reference the Gentry safety. I just installed one on a M-700 and thought it was me. It was a very time consuming operation, basiclly I lost my ass on the deal I figure I made about $4.00 an hour by the time I was done. I have to put one on a left hand M-700 and I was hoping it would go easier with second one. Now you have me thinkingI may be about to lose my ass again.

Jim, what I meant was NULA makes a 3 position safety for 700's but lately not available anymore. I believe you have to buy the complete trigger from Timney unless I am mistaken.

Someone, somewhere, in one of these discussions in the past, characterised putting a three position safety on a Rem 700 as like putting chrome wheels on a Yugo.

I thought it was funny, but some of you may not see the humor.

Razzer

Actually though, it would be an improvment. While you're at it, replace the bottom metal with a Williams unit. Smiler
