Gentlemens:

There is, finally, some news on the mythical buttplates you have heard about. We have been working on them all along, but it has been a bit of an uphill battle. We were trying to do some things that apparently cannot be done, and were forced added a couple of steps and some hand work to the process. I now understand why they cost as much as they do...

In any event, we have a real live prototype done. This is the standard design. We intend to make one with scalloped points top and bottom as well.

We have been asked about a solid plate, which is possible. How much of a demand is there for a solid plate? Should it have all four holes or only the top and bottom?

Our thanks to all who have offered encouragement and advice, and for the patience of you who were told they would be ready months ago. Any further comments and advice is welcome. It is not too late to change a few things, but it is getting close.

Respectfully,

Glenn Fewless

That looks great! For a solid plate I suggest just two holes. Any idea on price yet?

How about a trap door? Can you make a special for a Mod 63 Win. with at trap big enough for the loading tube to go in??

Just a thought...This looks very much like the Mc Farlane/Dakota buttplate,,which is very nice...in both cases and yours, I notice you've used a filister type screw head...You gotta be right on the money with angles...ever thought of making the screws with a 60 degree head? leaves a little "whoops" room...a couple degrees off and no big deal...thanks Duane

Duane, these buttplates are intended to be used by professionals who aren't going to be "a couple degrees off".

With the counterbores a tap/bump against the edge of the butt plate may make it slide off location.
Not c'sunk holes will maintain the location much better. Might avoid chipping the edge of the butt.
Check out flat butt plate M98s or VZ-24s.

I don't know who you are or what you do but, to make a comment like that about Mr Weibe had ought to be done tongue in cheek. I do know Mr Weibe and a slur like that is uncalled for. He is the "comsumate professional" and his credentials are impeccable.

I only hope there was some jest intended.

Gentlemens:

Thanks for the ideas and interest. I will try to answer some questions.

Ray, we had not considered a trapdoor plate but it is a great idea. I am sure one could be made with a trap located for your specified use. Howsomever, I am afraid it will be a while before we could get to that. I do like the idea though, both the plate as a regular trap and also as a way to hide the magazine tube.

The checkered plate is a good idea as well. It too is down the road a bit as I would have to make a model for the Deckel or write a program for the mill. Man o man, this thing is like one of them alligators from the sewers of New York! It all started out with me making "a" butt plate for a client.

Duane, someone else suggested an angled screw head as well. I like the idea and we will have a look at it. This too will be a while though as we have the cutters ground and a batch of screws made.

As for the price, there's the rub. We were originally quoting $100 for the plate but have discovered considerable more work in it than we originally thought. Therefore we have had to raise the price to $115. We will re-evaluate this after we have made batch or two of them, but this should be a workable figure.

In regards to ordering, we already have some orders and will fill them first. If you are interested in placing an order please write me at gfewless@tds.net and put something about butt plates in the subject line. Send no money, we will work out the billing when we have a product to ship. The Customer Satisfaction Policy will be pretty simple: if you are not happy with our product then we are not happy with your money and will trade you back even up.

Regards to all,

Glenn Fewless

Forrest

this brings up an interesting question. Is one of these buttplates in the works for the Cheryl Searcy Memorial Rifle Project or was some other type of butt treatment already decided upon?

Duane wants to leave it with a checkered butt stock until a winner is determined then let them determine the LOP and whether they want a pad or a plate of some type. If he leaves it semi-finished at 14", he can make it as short as 13-1/4" with a plate or 15" with a pad.

A skeleton plate like this is certainly an option. Duane will be doing the winner (and all of us) a huge favor by leaving the butt unfinished. It will be a lot of additional work to add a pad or a plate to a mostly finished stock.

And it's a big relief to those of us who wondering about the "whoops" factor in that endeavour.
