First off, I'm not a gunsmith, just a lowly machinist.But...comparing cartridge drawings it looks like....Yes.The 284 case is .135 longer and the shoulder is .021 larger in diameter. The base to shoulder measurement is .134 longer on the 284 case. The 7-08 chamber will cleanup without setting the barrel back.As for "other alterations"...the magazine box may be a problem depending an which action you are using. If it's a Model 70 you are in luck, just remove the spacer in the rear and you'll have about 3.1 inches. If it's a Rem 700 short action, don't do it.Lots of work required to get the mag box to 3.1 or thereabouts. But it can be done, local 'smith here has squeezed the 7 Rem Mag into a short 700 action.

Yes the 7-08 can be rechambered to 284. In a short action other than the Winchester I'm not too sure I would recommend it. Feeding is an issue with the short M70 with the push feed models being less likely to be difficult. Regards, Bill
