Just bought a Whitworth .375. I'd like to change it to .416 Rem. Mag. Is it feasible or just not worth the effort to get the present barrel rifled out to .416?

Who might do this if feasible?

You can tell I know squat about this stuff.

I would be willing to bet that it would be a lot cheaper just to rebarrel it. That is if it a bolt action.

Will,
I think the Whitworth uses Mauser barrels and threads. Unless yours is a profiled barrel with lots of furniture you want to keep, it'll be cheaper to rebarrel.

For $188 you can get a standard Mauser long-chambered 416 Lothar-Walther barrel from Woody at www.lothar-walther.com It'll take about a month. That's the cheap part.

Then take it to a gunsmith to have the barrel installed, and the feed rails opened up.

You may also need the mag box opened up. How wide is your mag box at .22 inches and 2.4 inches from the back? The 416 Rem wants a minimal taper. Something close to 1 inch wide at the belt and .91 wide at the shoulder would be ideal. If the taper is minimum the 416 might feed as is.

Opening your mag box up would let you keep the current stock/inletting.

It'll cost you 400 for a rebore, with no certainy that it will be worth a darn.

send it to pacnor, 450 later, they'll put the same sights on it, mount it, blue it, and touch up feeding...

you'll then need to open the stock just a tad on the barrel and bed it...

Thanks guys. I guess I better keep it the way it is. Cleaning it now. Doesn't look like it have ever been shot. Lucky to find it.

Will,

Very wise decision my friend.

You never know when you might need a back up rifle in Africa

Saeed, my friend, you are correct as it was my desire to use the rifle for backup, for impala.

Sadly, I must now relegate the .375 to its only useful purpose, as a tent stake.
