Building a 6.5/284 sporter
I am trying to build a reasonably light/ low recoil/ inexpensive long range sporter. I had thought of Sendero SF action (trued, tuned trigger),H&S sporter stock, Kreiger 28" 8.5 twist barrel. Lapua brass ($50/100). 142gr.Matchings. Will it fly? Can it be done better another way? Where can I buy the action? Any suggestions/comments welcome

I would find a donor action then go HERE to find a stock to my liking....Most people don't really like the HS Stocks that well, and you would be paying for a stainless, fluted, heavy barrel that you were just going to replace anyway!!

If you put a nice McMillan on there you would have a sharp looking tack driver. I basically have the same setup except with a BDL and she shoots better than my abilities.

Akace, who posts here often built one in the last year. He used a Mauser action and put a wood stock on it and it is a tack driver. I will tell him to take a look here and post some info.

Bill, I'm building one on a 700 long action, so I can seat the bullets out for max. powder, with a #5 Shilen 26" barrel, and will be using heavier bullets. Barrel will be throated to allow bullet to be seated within ten to fifteen thousands of lands. A 28" barrel seems a tad long for a light weight sporter, will 2" more help that much?

Here are the spec on the 6.5-284 I built last year.

1909 Argentine action
26" Heavy sporter Douglas barrel
Blackburn trigger
S&K Rings and mounts
Burris 4x12 scope
English walnut stock

I have shot several groups in the .400 area. Best group has been .398. Here are some pics.

The last pic makes the stock look short....its not..the rest of the stock is buried in the ivy.

I bought a 3 year old,300 rounds fired 700 BDL with a good pillar bed and trigger job by Norman Clark.Kreiger barrel being fitted by Precision Rifle Services. I have bought a Swarovski 6-18x50 scope. It may end up a little heavier than I would ideally like. Thanks to all who posted. MAY THE WIND BLOW LIGHT, MAY YOUR GROUPS BE TIGHT.Bill Morris
