I want to put to gether a single shot 17HMR and have a Steven's Favorite and a Ithica 49 Single Shot action (Martini style action). I know the Ithica will work as they made this rifle in 22 Mag but what about the Favorite.
These action were made in larger (25 and 32 IIRC) rimfire rounds but never in a 22Mag to my knowledge. I have asked several Gunsmiths about the idea and most don't know. I talked to one guy in CA that had a Favorite he had made into 22MAg and he claimed it worked fine. I have looked the action design over and can't believe the action strength would be a problem but am a bit concerned about the amount of unsupported case (Well it is supported by the extractor).

Has anyone made a extractor for the Favorite that didn't leave so much of the case unsupported?

I guess I am just fishing for ideas, thoughts and/or recommendations.

BTW, I called Savage and asked about there New Favorite in 22 Mag (Model 30GM) that is due out next year, thay got kind of quite when I asked if it would be chamered in 17HMR. Anyway, I am waiting to here back on a voice mail I left with the design guy about action strength/differences between the 30G and 30GM.

Thanks and Good Hunting

You might check out www.varnerguns.com/ and see what they say. They may have some plans for a 17rimfire.

i had a Steven's Favorite 25years ago that was chambered for 22mag. it had been rebarreled and chambered to 22mag by a gunsmith in Alaska but i can't remember his name, his trade-mark stamp had a Bear and a Float Plane in it. the little rifle shot great, it had a Verner tang rear site with a Redfield style front. fun little rifle, use to kill crows out to 200 or so yards with ease. i traded it to a guy in VA Beach for a Colt Woodsman i still have.

Savage showed a favorite in 22 mag for the 2002 year. Same as the 22 LR but has a full octagon(sp) barrel. I would think that if the .17HRF catches on they will also produce it in that caliber also if your willing to wait a bit.
