So...I was looking at my custom m98 and realized that the when the barrel was fitted to the action the gunsmith did not relive the extractor into the barrel. The gun is several yrs old and I have shot it several times. Is this a problem that needs to be fixed???? All my other m98's and m70's have the extractors relived into the barrel. Perry

Only the intermediate actions like Yugos that have the "safety breech" have extractor cuts. 99.9 percent of Mausers do not have nor need one, as Jim said. But if you have fired it, and it worked correctly, why do you think now that there is a problem?

It's controlled round feed and not a camming style extractor so as long as it closes without undue force, it's fine. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

As previously said its only on certain Mausers that have an extractor cut . Those with the safety breech AND straight walled RIMMED cases . Some smiths experimenting with high vel/pressure 219 wasp loads completely enclosed the rim with the extractor cut .
