I bought a CZ 550 American Safari in 375 H&H with the intentions of having the stock sealed, barrel bedded and barrel/stock protected (coated)for use in AK on brown bear. 4 months later the gunsmith said he had not started it yet. I went and picked up the rifle and will never use him again as he is totally unreliable even though he is good. I am close to being out of time and need to decide which path to take. So my delima is what to do now or more accurately what do I need to do.

My CZ 375 H&H is NIB so I can sell it or keep it. I am wondering if a laminated stock will fair much better in AK than the standard solid wood stock and if any sealing of it would be required. The blue barrel while I prefer SS isn't as big a problem I don't think. I am not totally sure about the need to bed the barrel.

I have found a few synthetic/blue and synthetic/SS in Weatherby 375 H&H and 340. I have also located a NIB 416 Rigby with laminated stock and blue barrel. If I was going synthetic/SS I was leaning towards a Winchester as the Sakos are absolutely too hard to come by.

Beside using it for brown bear I want to hunt moose and cape with this gun. The 375 I think is great for smaller bear, plains game and elk, but am now wondering if I wouldn't be better off adding the 416 caliber to my collection.

As always I appreacite any and all input from member of AR.

Just my opinion but that 375 will kill about any thing on this globe and i think maybe even an elephant.
i would go get a small bottle of truoil and seal the barrel channel and all the action mag well area. remove the but and seal that area also. let dry the wax with a good all weather wax.

Hivelosity has it right. Seal it with trueoil and then wax it...will be fine

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

i'd not even worry abt the bedding. i know the arrangement looks "odd" at best but i've got now a 416 (which i haven't had the chance to shoot that much) but i also had an older zkk in 375 which was bedded exactly the same way.

i've still got a 3" 10 shot group at 100 yds which i agree doesn't sound impressive but:
a) was last 10 shots of 20 - bbl was hot as blazes
b) scope was adjusted twice in the 10 shot string and inside the 3" group are (2) each 3 shot groups - 1 high and 1 low - and (1) 4-shot group centered. the shots in each of these sub groups are touching.

before i let anybody screw around w/ the bedding i'd find out just what it'll do as is.

i agree w/ the foregoing - all you need is some waterproofing.

I used a plain old pre-64 Model 70 Supergrade in .375 H&H for three years throughout Alaska - in the interior, in the coastal mountain ranges and on Hinchinbrook Island. All I did was to thoroughly coat all steel surfaces with Birchwood-Casey Sheath, and wipe it down each day. Never had any rust, never had any change in zero.
