I would like to build 2 rifles from guns i already own. i want a 257 roberts and a 35cal. either 358 win or 35 whelen. the possible donor guns are:
1. pre-64 winchester model 70 featherweight in 30-06
2. winchester 70 classic featherweight in 243 win
3. ruger 77 tang safety in 22-250

Which action would you use for which cartridge and why?

is there a gunsmith you would recommend for the job.

I would use the pre-64 for the .35 Whelen and the model 70 classic for the Roberts. Sell the Ruger to help finance the projects. Wink

Hi Rusty,
1) 257 Roberts would be on the 243 donor rifle.
2) 35 Whelen would be on the 30-06 donor rifle.
It should be a simple re-barrel because the cases are of similar size and shape as the donor rifles, meaning you shouldn't have feeding problems.
Using model 70 actions and stocked alike you will gain familiarity with both while handling only one.
As a corollary to your question, mine are on 30-06 donor model 70 actions.
1@ 6.5-06
2@ 35 Whelen
Good luck, Doug

Rusty,

If the 30-06 barrel is in good shape and it shoots well send it off to Jim Dubell at Clearwater re-boring have him re-bore it. Just my .02 worth.

Rusty75,
Bill gave you good advice. The only thing I would add is that if the M70 Classic is the short action version it might be a little short to be optimal for the 257 Roberts. The Bob really benefits from a long action if you want to shoot 120 grain bullets at full speed. Just a consideration.

Agreed

I truly understand wanting a .257 Roberts but if the M-70 SA is to be used I'd really consider a .243, .250 Super, or a .260 Remington.

All good advise ; I would agree with VapoDog on the .260 Remington in lieu of a .257 Roberts .

Just another opinion for $ 0.0025 !.

Well...I'll be different

I would build the 257 Roberts on the 30-06 and build a 358 Win on the 243.

For the reason stated above the Roberts is much better suited for the long action and I don't know an animal on the planet that is gonna know the difference of 150 fps between the 358 Win and the 35 Whelen.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Pre 64 for the .35 caliber.

M70 Classic for the "Bob"

The M70 actions will under pin the value of your custom rifles.

Keep the Pre 64 intact.

Use the winne for a 358 win and the other for the Roberto.

I realy like the 358 it is a great hunting round.

If your M70-243win is indeed a shortaction, typically, it should have a 3.08"magbox just like an m70WSM receiver, but with a rear spacer to accomodate 243win,(just like my m70Sa22/250.)
Id say you could get a 257Rob-120gn moving at fair pace with a 3"+ magbox. Depends how pedantic you are about velocity from the 257r.
Me personally I prefer to go a bigger case, rather than having bullets sticking overly out, like a long neck goose.
I know you didnt ask,& I dont condemn or want to change your choice of chamberings, there great, but Id go with 7x57.Cause with a good 140gn its just a super, still mild to shoot, allround bomb, and creates a more reasonable gap between the two intended rifles, but with still notable difference between the two. I dont know anyone(sane)who can fairly disregard its virtues, or that has ever regretted having one. Ya just cant go wrong with a 7x57!(EndRant!) Cool

do a 25-284 on the short action and a 358-284 on the other, save that P64. 30-06 capacity on a true 2" short action case...designed from the ground up by Winchester for that purpose. Besides, you can order a 2-reamer set in 358-284 and have the dies made with those reamers. Then have the reamer maker, I highly recommend Dave Manson, cut the 358-284 reamers to 25-284 and save a little $$$. Got a great pair, one basic case to bulk buy; and stud status with your shooting circle for your acumen in choosing two awesome wildcats to hunt with.

Just one man's opinion...

this pre-64 30-06has little collector value due to shortened stock and non original bottom metal, so it's going to jim kobe to become a 257 roberts featherweight. i will save the sa classic for next year's 358 win.
thanks all for the advice

You don't use chamber reamers for making loading dies. Unless of course you wear them down a few thou... Big Grin
