1908 Brazilian Action
I have a line on one of these actions, would it be a good action to build a 358 winchester on?

yes it would.....and even better for a 35 Whelen.

I was thinking either 358 or 35 Whelen like a 35 caliber of some varity.

Whatever you choose best keep pressures down on DWMs. They're beautiful but they stretch.

Unless you prep them properly. Ask 22WRF.

Another vote here for the 35 Whelen. The 358 Win doesn't fill the available space and operates at higher pressures in order to accomplish the task at hand.

Gents: If one was in posession of a good 1909 action, what is the longest cartridge that would comfortably fit? Am I correct in assuming a 375 H&H would be too long? jorge

Yes.....a .375 H&H is too long.....unless one is into surgery on the action. That action will do a .375 H&H just fine given some smithing.

There are folks that cut them in half and add a piece in the middle.....some thin them severely up front like the FNs were done and the Zastava.

There are folks that will do it for you and some that post here.....ask them for a price.....

a 1909 will fit a 3.65" round, it should be limited to a 3.35" round, and the 376 steyr is awesome

thanks for the replies. i knew one could make a 375 fot but it required extensive surgery. Just fishing around right now. Maybe a 9.3X62? jorge

I believe David Miller has used them for .404 Jeffries.

Well how about it guys? will an Argentine work with a 404 w/o extensive rework? I've heard lots of horror stories of folks trying to get the 404 to feed. jorge

If that was my action and I was dead set on a 404 in it, I'd see a smith that would guarantee the job.....and I'd not pay a dime for the gun until it proved to be as advertized.

The work involved to make a .375 H&H is roughly the same as a 404Jeff. (IMO it's fairly extensive.)

The above photo is proof that it can be done....

Thanks fellows. As I am in no hurry, guess I'll have to study the matter further, but a 9.3 seems reasonably simple to do. jorge

That one is a piece of cake so to speak.....

That action will nicely handle the 375 and 416 Taylors if you like.

Maybe if you made it to "feed from the center" you wouldn't have to change anything.

I refer you to this post by Jim Dubell speaking of modifying a regular length Model 70 to 416 Rigby.

"I have one in progress right now for a customer. If all goes according to schedule it will be at the ACGG show the end of january. The answer to your question is yes it can be done...'if it takes every last dime you got' It is no simple conversion, but I went about it from a different angle than the previous poster. I did make a new set of bottom metal, including a box that feeds from the center. The action was a 30-06 and still has the feed rails untouched. If not for the opened up bolt you could put a 30-06 back on this action. As I said it can be done but it is one of those projects where the customer gave me free rein, " just make it like you're making it for yourself " is what the instructions were. I saw one other done by Al Biesen and heard of another, don't remember the maker on that one.
Jim"
