Some weeks ago purchased Browning Safari FN Mauser w/ typical Browning gloss finish and even though the rifle was in excellent condition throughout for a rifle some 48 yrs old, the stock had some dings/blemishes and decided to restore the finish. Finally got all the old finish off and trying to decide to go w/ oil finish or gloss finish, noticed that I had a jug of acrylic hardwood floor finish and decided to test it on a piece of walnut blank I have and can report that the finish is a duplicate of Browning's gloss finish and is very easy to apply. It is self leveling and drys in very short order. One coat alone is actually a good sealer and w/ couple more coats it is about as glossy as you can imagine. Normally would not want the gloss, but it is a great Browning gloss replacement finish. The acrylic coating is tough enough to withstand walking on it so it should be tough enough for the service the rifle will see. Again, not everyone's tastes, but takes about 10 minutes to apply and withing 3-4 minutes it is glass hard and good to go. Might want to try it if you want a glossy/glass finish on a wooden stock and it certainly does let the figure/grain show through. martin | ||
